Erin Samueli, The Samueli Foundation

By Scott LaFleur, Executive Director

The Samueli Foundation’s incredible generosity is helping to create a vibrant and lasting pathway into the heart of Sherman Library & Gardens. Through their support, the central walk will be completely reimagined, showcasing coastal Mediterranean climate plants that offer brilliant seasonal color year-round. A dramatic Aloe tree allée will anchor the space—a horticulturally unique and artistically sculptural element that draws the eye inward and invites visitors on a whimsical, breathtaking journey. It’s a design that’s sure to captivate even Erin Samueli herself.

I had the pleasure of meeting Erin at a Samueli Foundation event in 2024. She spoke with genuine fondness about Sherman Library & Gardens, sharing one of her favorite memories:

“My favorite visit to the Sherman Library and Gardens was when I went with my best friend when we were in college. We got dressed up in our fanciest garden outfits and took photos with the beautiful flowers and scenery around the gardens. It was such a beautiful and idyllic day that I look back on with great fondness.”

At the time, Erin had just formally joined the Foundation’s board. She mentioned how excited she was to support our proposal, and when I asked her why, her answer struck a chord with me:

“Having a little bud of botanical nature and beauty in the middle of CDM is a special gift, and strengthening it for the future is an essential part of what makes that community special.”

The event itself was an inspiring day—highlighted by an interactive art project and a beautiful stroll through the Orange County Museum of Art. I’ll always cherish that experience, not just because of the setting, but because of the personal connection we shared. My full name is Aaron Scott LaFleur, and to this day, Erin is the only person I sign my emails to as “Aaron.”

I’m deeply grateful to Erin, Lindsey, and everyone at the Samueli Foundation—not just for their funding, but for their hands-on guidance and unwavering belief in the transformative power of places like Sherman Library & Gardens. Their investment ensures that we, and many other nonprofits, can amplify our impact and continue to cultivate beauty, connection, and community for generations to come.
