Bonsai & Fuchsia Show & Sale

Bonsai Show
Presented by Coastal Bonsai
Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1  | 10:30 am – 4 pm
All events free with garden admission.

Come and learn about the art of bonsai. The show will include a display of exquisite miniature trees presented by Coastal Bonsai and introduce visitors to a variety of techniques and approaches. Following the ancient Japanese tradition, the trees are intended to replicate the character of old trees found in nature using trees or shrubs grown in containers. Find out more about the art of dwarfing and reshaping the gifts of nature into a living art object.

This group of bonsai enthusiasts is dedicated to sharing their skills and to inspiring the next generation or growers. Members of Coastal Bonsai will be available during the show to give advice and information, including giving talks and workshops.

Talk: Succulent Bonsai
Sunday, June 1 at 11:30 am

Join Gary Lai and broaden your understanding of the art of Bonsai and how you can use a common succulent to develop a bonsai. A short description of the Portulacaria Afra succulent will be given with several samples being shown and what attributes this plant species has that makes it an ideal house and garden plant. Until only recently there has been an increase interest among some Bonsai enthusiasts for using some succulent plants in shows as companion plants for their tree displays and one particular Bonsai artist who lived locally in Southern California started using the elephant jade he was propagating as his Bonsai training material because of it’s unusual bark which exhibited cork formation and this visual attribute bestowed a feeling of great age to the tree. There will be several examples of this cork bark jade that have been prepared using Bonsai training techniques.
