Visual Materials Use Policy

Sherman Library & Gadens’ collections include thousands of historic photographs, maps, and other items of visual interest. A selection of these items is available for viewing on the Sherman Library Digital Catalog. In most cases, the property rights to the physical items belong to Sherman Library & Gardens. However, literary rights, including copyright, are often retained by the creators and their heirs. In all cases, it is the responsibility of the user to determine who holds the copyright and to pursue the copyright owner or his or her heir for permission to publish or other commercial use where Sherman Library & Gardens does not hold the copyright. Personal Use

Sherman Library & Gardens may make available high-resolution copies of photographs or other materials for personal use. Persons seeking a copy of an image for personal use must agree that the item purchased from Sherman Library & Gardens is for personal use only. Furthermore, they must agree that they will not publish, reprint, broadcast, or re-duplicate the photograph in any manner whatsoever without the express written permission of Sherman Library & Gardens.You may purchase photographs for personal use through the Sherman Library Digital Catalog by clicking on the “Buy” button in the upper right corner when viewing a specific item.

Publication or Other Commercial Use

Sherman Library & Gardens may make available high-resolution images of photographs for publication or other commercial purposes. Persons seeking a copy of an image for commercial use must submit their request to the Library Director, by sending a completed Use Agreement form to [email protected] or by submitting their request through the Sherman Library Digital Catalog by clicking on the “Buy” button in the upper right corner when viewing a specific item.

Consent may be given on behalf of Sherman Library & Gardens as the owner of the physical item for the use in a specific project. This consent is not intended to include or imply permission from the copyright owner. Literary rights, including copyright, may be retained by the creators and their heirs. It is the responsibility of the researcher to determine who holds the copyright and to pursue the copyright owner or their heirs for permission to publish where Sherman Library & Gardens does not hold the copyright.
