“My favorite memory from Sherman Library and Gardens was helping with the transformation of the Sun Garden. It was really fun to see how much thought and effort goes into turning the space into a colorful new display. I’m really interested in design and have been thinking about possibly becoming a landscape architect, so getting to hear the designers thought process behind the different plants was very cool.
Sherman Library and Gardens has grown my interest in plants and horticulture. The gardens and calm atmosphere allow me to reconnect with the outside world and take time off of screens/social media.
Sherman Library and Gardens is a place that fuels creativity and curiosity. Throughout my time working at Sherman, I have learned so much about different plant species and how to tend to plants based on their individual needs. It has sparked my curiosity and has inspired my new collection of house plants!”

“I think my favorite memory is attending the special events. I have attended the Nights of 1000 Lights, the Garden Party, some special lectures, art classes and Sunday/Funday. I was unaware that the gardens offered so many varied events throughout the year before I became a docent.
The staff and volunteers are all so helpful, nice and informed that it has become one of my favorite places to hang out. In addition, just wandering around in the garden or having lunch at 608 Dahlia has become a wonderful respite in this hectic world.
Sherman Library & Gardens is a hidden gem in the beach area. One square block in this impacted city is such a treasure that I have encouraged family and friends to visit and learn about such varied plant life. I think the gardens are laid out so nicely with very distinctive areas from the succulent garden to the conservatory. I find it interesting that so many residents aren’t aware of the gardens and the beauty behind those walls. Even the adobe house on the corner has a story about early California. So I guess as a docent I feel it is my responsibility to enlighten the community and encourage a visit and become involved in this unique garden.”
