Julia Argyros: A Legacy of Generosity at Sherman Library & Gardens
By Scott LaFleur, Executive Director
Sherman Library & Gardens has long been a sanctuary for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and the local community. Thanks to the generosity of Julia Argyros, this treasured space is undergoing a remarkable transformation—one that will inspire visitors for generations to come.
Through the Grow The Gardens campaign, Julia Argyros has helped reimagine the landscape of Sherman Library & Gardens, ensuring that its beauty and accessibility continue to flourish. Her generosity will lead to the creation of the Julia Argyros Bell Tower Entrance, a vital gateway that enhances visibility and accessibility while welcoming guests into the gardens’ natural beauty and rich history.
Julia’s contributions extend beyond financial support; they reflect a deep commitment to community. She has long been a devoted advocate for Sherman Library & Gardens—not only through philanthropy but by simply bringing friends and family to experience the gardens she so dearly loves. Her enthusiasm has had a ripple effect, leading to cherished events such as the Ladies of Chapman Tea and the transformation of the Volunteer Association Garden Tour into a beloved annual Summer Garden Party, a tradition that emerged thanks to her generosity during the challenges of COVID-19.
One of the most memorable moments with Julia came to lunch when the Grow The Gardens campaign had only just begun—so new that no official materials had even been created yet. Over a lively lunch at the Gardens, Julia asked to see something she could support. In a flurry of excitement, a list of opportunities was quickly assembled and brought to her table. With her signature humor and determination, she playfully kept the conversation going, calling back with questions—until finally, with a knowing smile, she declared, “You know, I don’t have a Bell Tower named after me. Can I be your first donor?”
That moment, filled with laughter and warmth, cemented Julia Argyros as the very first donor to the Grow The Gardens campaign. Her generosity, enthusiasm, and unwavering belief in Sherman Library & Gardens have shaped the future of this cherished institution.
Julia means the world to me and those who know her—kind, charming, and always supportive. To Sherman Library & Gardens, she is a beacon of commitment, a community partner who has loved this organization for years, and the driving force behind a new front door that will welcome future generations to its beauty, history, and heart.
