Crown of the Sea — PCH Donor Wall
As Sherman Library & Gardens undergoes exciting changes, the Building Committee remains committed to ensuring that every design detail reflects the uniqueness and beauty Sherman holds in our hearts. The connections between Sherman, the community, and a talented network of artists, historians, and craftsmen are central to this vision. We want Sherman to have a presence beyond our garden walls, an idea recently brought to life through the completion of two local murals in the CDM Village. The Committee continues to pursue meaningful, site-specific enhancements that honor the area’s iconic cultural and artistic resources. Through collaborations with multiple local artists, these relationships remain woven into the fabric of Sherman’s history, present, and future, making this evolution especially meaningful.
As our first major artistic expression, we are proud to introduce the Crown of the Sea Donor Wall as a powerful new entry statement. The idea for the donor wall emerged organically as we explored a range of artistic concepts from local specialty craftsmen, each offering their own interpretation of the “Sherman Funk” through decorative tiles, handcrafted pavers, custom wrought iron work, and landscape-inspired finishes. As these concepts were integrated into our sample boards and mock-ups, a unifying vision began to take shape: an integrated tapestry with a fresh aesthetic that complements our botanical oasis and elevates the experience of public art for residents and visitors alike. In doing so, we recognized a meaningful opportunity to honor our Founders’ original vision while establishing a new standard of beauty at the entry to our gardens, archives, and Heritage Art Collections.
Where the Gardens Meet the Sea
The new bell tower entrance creates a stunning, welcoming gateway that invites the community to experience the beauty of Sherman Library & Gardens from Pacific Coast Highway.
As our first major artistic expression, we are proud to introduce the Crown of the Sea Donor Wall as a powerful new entry statement.
Adjacent to the bell tower, this artistic interpretation of the community phrase Crown of the Sea, features a series of glass plaques connected through custom wrought iron design work. Together, the plaques form an accurate depiction of Corona del Mar’s Little Corona Beach. From the gold of the sand to the blue of the water, this installation symbolizes Sherman’s place at the heart of Corona del Mar, where nature, community, and heritage converge.
