Cultivating for Creatures: Balancing Plants, Animals, and People in the Zoo Landscape
June 9, 2026 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for an engaging evening that opens with a brief history of the Santa Ana Zoo and the evolution of its landscapes, highlighting the often-overlooked relationship between animals and plants. The talk will explore how thoughtful horticulture supports animal wellbeing—from food and enrichment to shelter and habitat design—while examining the unique challenges and opportunities of working with plants in a zoo setting.
Ethan Fisher is a lifelong Orange County resident and Director of the Santa Ana Zoo, where he has helped shape the institution’s vision for more than two decades. Under his leadership, the Zoo achieved accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and expanded its focus on animal welfare, conservation, and immersive guest experiences, including Goat Trails, River’s Edge, and Flight, a live butterfly experience.
A passionate advocate for nature, Ethan’s interest in wildlife and plants began in childhood and continues to guide his work today. He holds a B.A. in Biology from UC Irvine, a Certificate in Business Administration from UC Irvine Extension, and a graduate degree in Landscape Architecture from UCLA Extension. Since joining the Zoo in 2001 and becoming Director in 2017, he has been recognized for his inclusive leadership and dedication to connecting the community with wildlife, conservation, and the landscapes that support them.
