Interning at the Sherman Library & Gardens

By: Alyssa Perez
Becoming a library Intern at the Sherman Library & Gardens was one of the best experiences of my career so far. I am studying to be a librarian and being able to work under such a skilled Library Director, Jill Thrasher, has greatly improved my practical hands-on skills in libraries and has also made me fall deeper in love with library work. With the books, artifacts, and memory that we libraries fight to preserve and make accessible for those who love to learn.
Working on creating the digital catalog for the library has been one of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of. It is hard in some ways and easy in others.
It makes me feel like I am figuring out a puzzle, trying to fit all the pieces together to get a clear picture. Digital cataloging is so important because it helps libraries help other people! By creating a digital catalog, the Sherman library will be able to have more open access to their patrons, docents, and researchers on what exactly we have in the library and archives. This makes it easier for the researchers who come in for specific information to be able to browse the catalog more efficiently.
A digital catalog makes searching for information easier because of the advanced searching methods like key word search or putting in a specific year you want information from or what type of format. I love history. I love preserving history and I loved being a small part of it at the Sherman Library & Gardens, which is one of the biggest libraries specializing in the history of the Pacific Southwest. What an absolute pleasure it has been to be a small part of this history.
