An Interview with Lisa Wagner, Director of Education and Programs
What’s your story? Tell us about yourself!
I was born and raised in Orange County and upon graduating high school, moved around to various cities including Boulder, CO, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and then returned to my roots settling back to Huntington Beach over a decade ago. My husband is a “Chefpreneur,” and we are parents to two human children, ages 5 and 10, along with a furry child, an almost 11-year-old border collie mix dog.
What is your professional background?
I graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA degree in Public Relations and Minor in Psychology. Collectively, I have worked in the nonprofit industry for over a decade and within the Education space for 15+ years. Some of the companies I have held leadership positions at include the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Teacher Created Materials, CulinaryLab Cooking School, and Think Together before joining the team at Sherman Library & Gardens as the Director of Education and Programs just last month, in October 2024.
What drew you to working at SLG?
I have been a fan from afar these last several years ever since a dear friend brought me here where I instantly fell in love with its beauty and rich history within Orange County. When I discovered the Education position open, I saw it as an amazing opportunity to cultivate education and appreciation for nature, history and the arts while making a meaningful impact within the community.
What do you love about Education?
I possess a growth mindset and consider myself to be a lifelong learner, always listening to podcasts and audiobooks and reading up on emerging trends. Learning something new brings me great joy, and I consider it to be a day well spent when I get to soak up new knowledge.
What is your favorite plant/flower?
I absolutely adore peonies and pretty much all succulents, but I’ll likely add more favorites to the list as an employee here.
What was your favorite and least favorite subjects in school?
Favorites would probably be English and History and least favorite…definitely Physics.
